Translation

What is Translation?

Translation is the process of transferring written or printed text from one language to another. Not to be confused with interpreting, which is the process of transferring speech between languages, there are different types of translation:

  • Machine, or Automatic Translation (MT) - This is done by a machine or computer which has grammatical rules and vocabulary programmed into it. Many online and website-based translators use this method as it is almost instantaneous. Unfortunately, as machines are unable to infer context and only follow their programming, this can lead to some quite inaccurate and often funny translations.
  • Human Translation (HT) - This can be split into two subcategories
    1. 'Pure' human translation, where a translator translates text using only their own knowledge and possibly bilingual dictionaries.
    2. Machine-assisted Human translation (MaT), where the translator uses translation software with translation memories to automatically translate parts of the text and then edits and translates the text appropriately.

My Translation

I do freelance translation between English and Korean. As I am a native English speaker, my Korean-English translations are more accurate than my English-Korean translations. English-Korean translations are accurate to the meaning, but as Korean involves quite complex vocabulary for certain written styles, I am not always able to match the vocabulary with the right nuances.
Korean-English translations, however, I am much more accurate with, and I am usually able to match the tone and style of the writing fairly accurately.

For the most part, I use pure human-translation, although when possible I use a translation tool to help with speed and accuracy. As I work a full-time job, I cannot be expected to produce results as fast as a professional translator, but I do get the job done.
